New Book Discussions for
Advent and Epiphany
Our next book discussion will be The First Christmas:
What The Gospels Really Teach About Jesus' Birth
by Marcus J. Borg and John Dominic Crossan.
These two authors show how history has biased our reading of the nativity story
as it appears in the Gospels of Matthew and Luke. They peel away the sentimentalism
that has build up over the last two thousand years.
The essence of this book asks the question: What do these birth stories mean in the context of the first century and the twenty-first century?
One group will begin meeting on November 27th, 6:30 pm, at the Griffin's home. A second group will meet at the church starting on Wednesday, November 29th, at 10:00 am.
Adult Sunday Education
The Adult Class is using "The Present Word", a Bible study published jointly by the Disciple, Presbyterian and Moravian Churches.
This class has lively discussions and the leadership for teaching is shared. The class meeting in the education wing of the church at 9:30 am on Sundays.
We have committed and skilled leaders for the Children's Church.
We are using materials entitled, "Feasting on the Word",
which are materials based on the lectionary texts that we use in worship.
It is important that we tell the stories of the Bible to our children and
help them interpret what the stories mean. Tradition has not always
been a good interpreter of the scriptures.
